One can easily guess that winemaker Ludwig Bindernagel is not originally from the Jura. However, like many transplants, he is a vociferous promoter of all things Jurassic.

This includes the indigenous reds Poulsard and Trousseau, which are found only in the Jura, but also Pinot Noir, which has been planted in the region for centuries.

Ludwig’s Pinot Noir has an exceptionally light touch, and though it is aged in used barrels for 12 months, the wine retains an exceptional freshness and vivacity. Expect a more mineral, earthbound flavor than Pinot from Burgundy, despite the fact that Nuits-Saint-Georges is only a short hour’s drive away.

2014 was a particularly difficult year to make red wines in the Jura - Japanese fruit flies (aka spotted wing drosophilia) attacked the vineyards just at harvest- though curiously they only go after the red grapes. Thanks to an enormous amount of sorting in the vineyards, catastrophe was avoided, and the domaine produced a delicious Pinot.

Enjoy this wine with a wild mushroom omelette, or some good terrines and charcuterie, and take extra care to keep the flies away.
