Aurelien Chatagnier could be the funniest winemaker in the Rhône, if not all of France. After falling off a stone wall and breaking his foot, he renamed the offending vineyard Pied Cassé (broken foot). There’s another vineyard he calls Le Teuf  (the party). In addition to a knack for naming things, he also has the knack for making great wine.

He makes superb wines from Saint Joseph, and his ultra-elegant, lean style ruffles some folks who like richer, modern Syrah.  Aurelien began his winemaking career in high school mentored by his neighbor and old school Rhone legend Jean-Luc Jamet. After working for François Villard, Aurelien created his Domaine in 2002, at the ripe age of 22. 15 years later, Aurelien Chatagnier has carved out a global reputation, despite his young age and miniscule production.

2015 is a banner year for red wines across France, and in the Northern Rhone, it’s one of the best vintages of the past 50 years. Whether you’re looking for a great Syrah to enjoy now, or a wine that will improve in the cellar for the next 5-7 years, once you’ve tasted Chatagnier’s St Joseph, it’s a wine that you’ll grab for intuitively whenever you have the chance.
