Frédéric Chastain's pitch-perfect Southern Rhone wines lend truth to the expression, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. At Domaine de la Jaufrette they have been making wine the same way they have for the past 3 generations:  organic farming, hand harvesting, slow fermentation, and long aging—then the wine is bottled and held until it is ready to drink— the 2007 Chateauneuf-du-Pape we are offering is the current release. In an appellation when many winemakers have gone the way of high extraction, new barrel aging, and boosting Syrah levels to please critics, Domaine de la Jaufrette has remained resolutely "vieille école": This wine is a balanced, delicious Chateauneuf-du-Pape made the traditional way, which is almost impossible to find in the U.S.

Although 13 (!) different varietals are permitted in the appellation, Chateauneuf-du-Pape is the world's best expressions of old-vine Grenache. The Domaine de la Jaufrette is 95% 50 year-old Grenache vines, grown on dense clay-limestone terroir with the large stones or, galets, that are typical of Chateauneuf ..and that most closely resemble the planet Mars. What does excellent Martian terroir make wine taste like?

The low yields of the old-vine Grenache give this wine incredible concentration and complexity. When we tasted this wine at the office, we threw around the following tasting notes..pipe tobacco..old leather..licorice..or is that cinnamon? Because Domaine de la Jaufrette waits until the wines are ready before releasing them, the tannins have been incorporated perfectlyIn an appellation that can be extremely variable, either too rustic or too jammy, the Chateauneuf-du-Pape from Domaine de la Jaufrette is balanced, peppery...and ready to drink now.
