Nuits-Saint-Georges is the namesake village of the Cotes de Nuits, the subsection of the Cote d’Or that stretches from Nuits to Marsannay and includes the most prestigious Pinot Noir vineyards in the world. Prior to the replanting in 2000, Les Terrasses des Vallerots vineyard had been an overgrown hillside of brambles for over a century. Bertrand Machard de Gramont spent over 20 years purchasing small parcels from his cousins and neighbors in order to acquire a sizeable 2 hectare parcel. The replanting was a phenomenal effort, requiring a team of specialist to come from the mountains to create 13 terrasses to allow access to this steep slope.
In 2004, his daughter Axelle took over the vineyards and winemaking, and converted all the vineyards, including Les Terasses, to organic farming. The wine from Les Terasses is a typical Cote d’Or Pinot Noir - medium in body, but full in flavor and complexity, aged for 14-18 months in mostly used barrels. Coming from a cool site at slightly higher elevation and bordering on the forest, the wine has a softer texture than others from the same village, while keeping the assertive acidity and cherry fruit.
